Back to School, Back to School

Monday, August 25th, 2008

If you can’t beat them, join them! There are numerous ways to enjoy yourself and get into the Back to School Spirit this fall, even if you are past the age of lunch boxes and number 2 pencils.

Hang out at a university. Universities offer a nice atmosphere for quiet reading, good conversation, people watching, and nostalgic reflections. Campuses are outfitted with nice places to sit outside, sports and leisure facilities, and interesting exhibits. Shasta College in Redding, College of the Siskiyous in Weed, and Chico State University in Chico have art and culture gallery space available for the enrichment of the students and the community.

Attend a community lecture or class. Dust off your old composition notebook and head out to a public lecture or class. There is always more to learn, especially from people who have personal experience. If you like variety, Turtle Bay Exploration Park offers diverse lectures, workshops, and classes each month. Or look into a club or organization with topics that interest you and see what they have to offer. The Highland Art Center in Weaverville offers art classes, and local libraries occasionally host speakers as well.

Take a Skip Day, everyday! The best way to beat the back to school blues is to remember that you are already finished with school, (if you are…) and everyday is skip day for you. So take a scenic drive, do some off-season vacationing. Prices are usually discounted and attractions are less crowded. Call around to your favorite summer time spots to see if they offer any deals while the season turns but the weather is still hot.
