Regional Tourism Summit A Great Success!

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

The Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association hosted the 3rd Annual Regional Tourism Summit last Tuesday, and it was a great success. Professionals from the travel and tourism industry all over the region showed up to hear keynote speaker Berkeley Young and to network with each other.

The Summit stressed the importance of the tourism industry for the overall economy. These statistics were printed in the Redding Record Searchlight, “Tourism in Shasta County in 2007 generated $365.2 million, according to the California Travel and Tourism Commission. Some 4,680 jobs were created by the industry in 2007.”

Vacationers are going to stay closer to home this season, and this region is ready for them!

Bike to Work Week in the Shasta Cascade

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Get energized during National Bike Month. May 11-15 is Bike to Work Week!
Caltrans and the NorCal Bicycle Partnership will be sponsoring a series of bicycling events that week in Redding as a part of California Bike Commute. There will be opportunities to learn tips for bicycle commuting, Energizer Stations for bicyclists set up around town on Wednesday May 13th, and various opportunities for lessons in bike maintenance. Ride your bike to the Asphalt Cowboys Pancake Breakfast downtown on May 15th and get your ticket for free! For more information check out: HeathyShasta.org
Chico is kicking off with The Pedalfest on May 10th at City Plaza. This will be a fun family celebration featuring vintage bicycle displays, bicycle powered smoothies, safe routes mapping station, best outfit contests, bike shop booths, and tips on carrying cargo and safe riding.
Denver, Colorado reported in 2008 that over 10,000 people tried biking to work for the first time during a city-sponsored event; and, a separate study showed that one in five people who participated in their Bike to Work Day as first time commuters became regular bike commuters. Who knows, you might be the next cycling convert!
