Back to School, Back to School

Monday, August 25th, 2008

If you can’t beat them, join them! There are numerous ways to enjoy yourself and get into the Back to School Spirit this fall, even if you are past the age of lunch boxes and number 2 pencils.

Hang out at a university. Universities offer a nice atmosphere for quiet reading, good conversation, people watching, and nostalgic reflections. Campuses are outfitted with nice places to sit outside, sports and leisure facilities, and interesting exhibits. Shasta College in Redding, College of the Siskiyous in Weed, and Chico State University in Chico have art and culture gallery space available for the enrichment of the students and the community.

Attend a community lecture or class. Dust off your old composition notebook and head out to a public lecture or class. There is always more to learn, especially from people who have personal experience. If you like variety, Turtle Bay Exploration Park offers diverse lectures, workshops, and classes each month. Or look into a club or organization with topics that interest you and see what they have to offer. The Highland Art Center in Weaverville offers art classes, and local libraries occasionally host speakers as well.

Take a Skip Day, everyday! The best way to beat the back to school blues is to remember that you are already finished with school, (if you are…) and everyday is skip day for you. So take a scenic drive, do some off-season vacationing. Prices are usually discounted and attractions are less crowded. Call around to your favorite summer time spots to see if they offer any deals while the season turns but the weather is still hot.

Visit the Great Indoors

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Summer is winding down but the weather has not gotten the memo.  The next couple weeks in the Shasta Cascade are supposed to be warmer than the ones we’ve seen over the course of this month.  Don’t worry, it won’t be unbearably hot; just a few degrees over what the temp has been.  Still, if you’re worried about it and would prefer to spend the majority of your day inside there are many options that will keep you nice and cool.

Visit the Bodies Revealed exhibit inside the Turtle Bay Exploration Park.  This fascinating exhibit features real human bodies on display.  This is a wonderful opportunity to learn what amazing machines our bodies are and the million different functions that all work in harmony to keep us moving.  Bodies Revealed will only be on display through September so don’t miss your chance to see the human body in a whole new way.

If you’ll be in the Chico area, stop by the Bird in Hand store where the world’s largest public display of yo-yos is housed, including the world’s largest working yo-yo.  You will be delighted and fascinated whether you’re young or just young at heart.

Try antiquing in downtown Red Bluff.  The town has a rich Victorian heritage that you can purchase a part of in any one of the numerous antique shops.  Tour the Kelly Griggs House Museum, a two story Victorian style home filled with displays of photographs, Indian architecture and much more.

There are endless options for keeping cool in the Shasta Cascade!

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

The Shasta Cascade Region of far Northern California is the ideal place for a last minute summer adventure.  There are endless possibilities for entertainment and excitement for the whole family.  One option is to spend a weekend in and around the quaint town of Weaverville in Trinity County.  The Trinity River, one of the six wild & scenic rivers in our region, is just south of Weaverville  The river offers a thrilling raft trip or a calm, gentle float with several raft companies offering a wide variety of river experiences for ½ day, full day or multi-day trips.

If you prefer a lake experience, you’ll find Trinity Lake just below the jagged peaks of the Trinity Alps. This lake is a premier destination for water sports enthusiasts – houseboating, swimming, fishing, wake boarding, just to name a few!

Perhaps you’d rather venture out into the Trinity Alps Wilderness where you’ll find numerous trailheads. If you don’t mind a little bit of a challenge and solitude – you can hike into some of the most beautiful high alpine lakes – guaranteed to make you feel like you are on top of the world!

Area attractions in include Joss House Taoist Temple, built in 1874 and now a state park, offering a glimpse into the culture and religion of thousands of Chinese miners. Or maybe you want to know what life was like for American Indians, gold miners and early white settlers of Trinity County at the Jake Jackson Memorial Museum.

And for art lovers, art flourishes in Weaverville with several galleries including Highland Art Center which offers a variety of art shows.  There are several cute little shops to browse.

Accommodations abound in the Weaverville area, from public or private campgrounds, to B&B’s, rustic cabins or guest ranches. There are several great restaurants, coffee houses, and even an old fashioned movie Theater. This and so much more are waiting for you in the historic gold rush town of Weaverville
