Check the road conditions and if they’re good, or just good enough, take the family sledding on Snowman Hill between Mt. Shasta City and McCloud off HWY 89. It’s free, but you need to bring your own sled or inner-tube. The Visitor’s Bureau at Mt. Shasta City (300 Pine Street) will have detailed information about how to get there and how the roads are. You’ll be shouting, “Weeeeeeeeee!” all the way home!”

Lava Beds’ caves, trails, camping, and attractions are open year-round. Occasionally in winter, snow can temporarily close park roads until they are plowed. Lava Beds is the site of the last major Indian war in California. It is a sight of major significance and striking physical character. If you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, it is beautiful this time of year! Take the in-laws for a day trip and check it out. While you are there, reserve a tour for Crystal Cave and Fern Cave. You will see amazing ice features such as frozen waterfalls, crystal footballs, and hoar frost. Children under 12 are not allowed as the tour is physically demanding. Call ahead for this attraction (530) 667-2282
