SHASTA  

·          Feeling lucky? Come try your luck by stopping into the Pit River Casino in Burney.

·          Take an in-depth look at the McCloud River Wintu tribe at Turtle Bay Exploration Park’s Native Images exhibit showing now until April 18th.

·          Get outside and hiking on the many trails Whiskeytown Lake has to offer then sit by the water for a cool, relaxing break.

TRINITY

·          For a more scenic adventure, try driving along the Trinity River Scenic Byway Highway 299. It’s absolutely beautiful!

·          Stop somewhere along the Trinity River and try your luck at gold panning and who knows, you might find some gold.

·          Take a stroll around the Courthouse Square in Weaverville where you’ll see old buildings with unique businesses

SISKIYOU

·          Mount Shasta Ski Park is an excellent place to spend the day. You can ski, snowboard, snowshoe, and much more!

·          Drive along the Bigfoot Scenic Byway and view wild and scenic river canyons, legendary Bigfoot Lore, and Native American and Gold Rush history.

·          Ice fishing can be enjoyed at Castle Lake, Juanita Lake, and Butte Valley. Contact local ranger stations for more information.

MODOC

·          Visit the Fandango Pass in the Modoc National Forest is a State Historical Landmark on Appelgate- Lassen Emigrant Trail. It is a well known trail that settlers in the 1800s used to get into California from the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.

·          Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway offers unrivaled volcanic features, natural wonders, Native American Lore.

·          The Modoc County Historical Museum in Alturas houses over 150 years of historical Native American artifacts.

LASSEN

·          Are you looking for a fun day in the snow with your family? Try Eskimo Hill by Lassen Volcanic National Park. Bring your own sled or whatever comes to your mind to slide down. Don’t forget the hot chocolate!

·          The Susanville Railroad Depot is a great place to start a leisurely hike or a bike ride up the Susan River.

·          Go play in the snow at Eskimo Hill by the Lassen Volcanic National Park. Bring your sled or anything you can think of to slide down on and don’t forget your hot chocolate!

PLUMAS

·          Plumas Country has many areas for horseback riding. Take guided horse rides or bring your own horses for an outdoor treat.

·          Spend a day enjoying the cold crisp air while skiing down the hills at the Lassen National Forest-Stover Mountain along their 8 runs, which are situated on 13 acres.

·          Are you a locomotive enthusiast? Stop by the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola. They have train rides, photos, artifacts, and a gift shop!

BUTTE

·          Bring a friend and spend a relaxing afternoon fishing along Butte Creek, which is known for its catfish and bass.

·          Learn the history of previous local pilots by visiting the Chico Air Museum and learn the history behind the aircrafts and artifacts that are on display.

·          Walk across the Bidwell Bar Suspension Bridge in Oroville, which was California’s first suspension bridge.

TEHAMA

·          Visit the Payne’s Creek Recreation Area and take a walk along one of their trails to see if you can spot some local wildlife.

·          Take a driving break and stretch out at the Olive Pit. Enjoy their extended tasting bar full of their delicious olives and other veggies and fruits. Also, sit down and have a meal at their café!

·          Get outside and enjoy the view of the Sacramento River while walking along one of the trails that can be found at the Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area.

When you think of ice skating do you get that little thought of a fantasy world in the back of your imagination? Bring that fantastic, mystical world to life by visiting one of these great ice skating arenas! Bring your loved ones and friends and have a joyous time to remember for years to come!

 

Mt Shasta

You can skate seven days a week, November through March, at the Siskiyou Ice Rink. The Siskiyou Ice Rink is the largest outdoor ice rink on the west coast. The rink is located in Mt. Shasta at Shastice Park, behind the High School. The rink offers extraordinary views of Mount Shasta, the Eddys, and Black Butte. Skate rentals are available. During the season, call 530-926-1702 for the “ice line”, or 530-926-1715 for the rink office. Call the Mt. Shasta Recreation department at 530-926-2494 for general information.

 

Plumas Country

When the temperature drops, Snake Lake is known to freeze over, allowing for some great ice skating.  Locals often hold hockey games, or just skate around on this winter wonderland. 

 

So what are you waiting for? Pack up your stuff and get going because winter won’t last forever! Don’t forget about your nice cup of hot cocoa. No winter trip is complete without it! Happy skating!

 More than 250 miles of trails are available to the snowmobiling enthusiast. Deer Mountain off Hwy 97 South of Macdoel. Pilgrim Creek off Hwy 89 east of McCloud. Medicine Lake link (four corners) 28 miles East of Macdoel on the forest road 15 from Red Rock Road, and Doorknob on Forest Road 49 off Hill Road North of the Lava Beds National Monument. Also available are warming huts located at each park.

 Mt Shasta: The Ski Bowl is a popular place to snowmobile as is Pilgrim Creek Snowmobile Park.

 The Fun Factory has many rentals and guides to take you and your companions out at Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park on Mt. Shasta. They offer 280 miles of groomed trail spread across three national forests and another 300 miles of wide open land. If you’re not into the whole guide routine, they offer unguided rides as well.  For snowmobiling the clothing recommended are: gloves, jacket, long underwear, weather proof pants and boots. Also, if you’re going out alone without renting or going through a guided tour you’ll need to bring a helmet along.

 So, if you’re looking for one adrenaline filled adventure, take a Forest Service map and your own snowmobile, or rent one and hang on!

February 21^st – February 27^th      

SHASTA  

·          If you’re searching for a great fishing spot to reel in those trophy trout then make your way to Fall River near Burney.

·          You will be transported back in time by visiting the historic town of French Gulch, which at one time was a bustling little mining town.

·          The Anderson Park has a variety of walking trails that are situated along the river and has excellent views of the surrounding mountains.

TRINITY

·          Spend a weekend away from it all in one of Weaverville’s local Bed & Breakfasts.

·          For the fishing enthusiast, head to Trinity River which offers steelhead, salmon, and browns.

·          Check the weather, grab your camera and head for “God’s Country” also known as Hayfork and be ready for that perfect winter landscape shot.

SISKIYOU

·          All the new snow makes great conditions for sledding, so pack up the sleds and head to Snowman’s Hill near McCloud.

·          This time of year is a great for visiting the Klamath Basin Birding Trail to view a wide variety of wintering bird species that congregate here in huge numbers.

·          Ice fishing can be enjoyed at Castle Lake, Juanita Lake, and Butte Valley. Contact local ranger stations for more information.

MODOC

·          Go explore Lava Beds National Monument. They offer a variety of recreational activities from caving, wild flower viewing and tranquil relaxation.

·          Head to the Warner Mountains, where you can collect obsidian from any of the four designated collection sites.

·          The Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge offers a great place to view nesting American white pelicans, so make sure to pack your camera.

LASSEN

·          Spend an afternoon snowshoeing along the Nobles Emigrant Trail Loop Snowshoeing Trail, all while enjoying views of Lassen Peak.

·          The Biscar Wildlife Area is a great place for viewing a variety of waterfowl along with other bird species.

·          Susanville Historic Train Depot is the trailhead for the Bizz Johnson Trail. Take a step back into history and view historic photographs of railroad and logging trains that rolled through town.

PLUMAS

·          Get away from it all this weekend to let loose pent up energy by hitting the Granite Basin Snowmobile Trail in Quincy.

·          Rent a pair of snow shoes and discover nature’s winter beauty by snowshoeing the various trails offered throughout Plumas country.

·          Take a drive along the Feather River Scenic Byway to view the countryside in its winter beauty.

BUTTE

·          If you’re a bike enthusiast then check out the Oroville Bicycle Trail that crosses the Oroville Dam and has views of the Sutter Buttes mountain range.

·          Be sure to bring your camera and visit the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area to view thousands of wintering migratory bird species.

·          Become engaged in the history behind Bidwell Mansion at Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park with their on the hour tours Tuesday through Friday.

TEHAMA

·          Walk or bike the many paved trails that are located along the Sacramento River in Red Bluff near the Diversion Dam.

·          Stop into Corning to sample an assortment of delicious, locally grown olives.

·          Visit the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina to experience another way of life and while you’re there sample wine that is made and grown by the monks.

SHASTA  

·          Have fun on rainy days by stopping into Need 2 Speed in Redding and race around the indoor track in one of their emission free karts. Check out their black light miniature golfing, too!

·          Sierra-Cascade Logging Expo is here now at the Redding Convention Center.

·          Spend a romantic evening sampling delicious food and wine at Anselmo Vineyards this Valentines Day!

TRINITY

·          Take a drive along the Trinity River Scenic Byway, but make sure to check the road conditions and weather.

·          The Highland Art Center is located in Historic Weaverville and houses many art exhibits for you to enjoy.

·          Are you a wine enthusiast? Visit Alpen Cellars for tours and tasting along with enjoying their picnic facilities.

SISKIYOU

·          Bring your snow shoes and head to Mt. Shasta to enjoy the scenery snowshoeing along the Bunny Flat to Panther Meadows trail.

·          Come discover the history behind the Fort Jones Museum, which is made from native rock and features Native American and pioneer artifacts.

·          Get outside and check out the Butte Valley National Grasslands, which are home to Golden Eagles, Sage Thrashers along with a number of other bird species.

MODOC

·          Take a drive along the Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway. View unrivaled volcanic features, natural wonders, and Indian lore.

·          In the Medicine Lake Highlands sits unique geological features. Explore the area and see for yourself!

LASSEN

·          Pack a hearty lunch and spend an afternoon snowshoeing along the Brokeoff Mountain Snowshoeing Trail near Mineral.

·          Susanville Historic Train Depot is the trailhead for the Bizz Johnson Trail. Take a step back into history and view historic photographs of railroad and logging trains that rolled through town.

·          Head to Lassen Volcanic National Park and view all four types of volcanoes in the world in just one place!

PLUMAS

·          The Historic Longboard Ski Revival Series Races are being held in Johnsville, February 21^st.

·          Spend a day enjoying the cold crisp air while skiing down the hills at the Lassen National Forest-Stover Mountain along their 8 runs, which are situated on 13 acres.

·          Winterfest Sled Dog Races are being held at Chester/Lake Almanor. Enjoy an eventful day with family and friends.

BUTTE

·          The Oroville State Wildlife Area has an abundance of local and wintering wildlife, which makes it a great place to visit and view wildlife.

·          Pack some water and head out in search of the Big Bald Rock, which can be found in the Plumas National Forest.

·          Bring a friend and come discover some local artists along with a number of art studios that can be found in Paradise.

·          Get out of the house and take a day to visit Mendocino National Forest. Walk on trails, have a picnic, and just sit and take in the serenity of the lake.
