24 Things To Do This Week In The Shasta Cascade Region

April 25th – May 1st         

SHASTA

  • Don’t miss out on the Celtic Renaissance fair starting May 1st and 2nd! Let the entertainment and atmosphere transport you back to the late 1500s Scotland.
  • There’s still time to have your fun in the snow! Head towards Lassen Volcanic National Park and you’re bound to find some!
  • The Shasta Damboree starts April 29th until May 1st. Join us for the classic car cruise, parade, live entertainment, food, and vendors! Don’t forget the fireworks starting at dusk on Saturday!

TRINITY

  • Stop to see the Natural Bridge in Hayfork. It is historically interesting and an unusual natural phenomenon with strong links to the Native Americans that once inhabited the area. The bridge is a limestone arch across a narrow ravine by nature.
  • Take an adventure along the Trinity Heritage Scenic Byway and get a chance to view mountain lakes, gold rush history, and the Pacific Crest Trail.
  • Visit the Whitmore Inn and experience the elegant Victorian home in the heart of the Historic District of Weaverville.

SISKIYOU

  • Were you a boy scout growing up? Then check out the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America exhibit at the Sisson Museum.
  • Stroll through the historic town of Dunsmuir and be sure to stop into Dunsmuir Hardware, which dates back to 1894.
  • If you love adventure then visit the Pluto Caves, once visited by John Muir, who in 1888 wrote about these caves in “Steep Trails”.

 LASSEN

  • Come enjoy the beauty of Eagle Lake, famous for its Eagle Lake rainbow trout and is California’s second largest natural freshwater lake.
  • If you are interested in seeing thousands of migrating waterfowl, then visit the Honey Lake Wildlife Area for great viewing opportunities.
  • You can experience a number of recreational opportunities at the Susanville Ranch Park, which has 22 miles of trails.

MODOC

  • Visit Goose Lake and come see why an emigrant group once mistook this lake as being the Pacific Ocean.
  • Have you ever seen petrified wood? Come explore Modoc County, which has a number of locations, where you can find petrified wood.
  • Want a chance to see Rocky Mountain mule deer? Then visit the Modoc National Forest, which is also home to over 300 other wildlife species.

PLUMAS

  •  It’s trout season again! Try your luck at Lake Almanor! For weekly updates visit www.shastacascade.com
  • For the locomotive enthusiast explore the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola.
  • Get a close look at mining relics and a restored stamp mill at Plumas Eureka State Park & Museum in Johnsville.

BUTTE

  • The Gray Lodge Wildlife Area in Gridley is a great place for birdwatching and wildlife viewing!
  • One of the best places to view historic architecture is Chico. Take an adventure through time with their Victorian Era buildings.
  • The week long celebration, Feather Fiesta Days Festival in Oroville, starts May 1st! Don’t miss out on the fun festivities!

 TEHAMA

  • Take a self-guided Victorian tour through the historic town of Red Bluff, where you can find a number of Victorian homes dating back to the 1860s.
  • Visit Corning, also known as Olive City, and stop in the Olive Pit. Their taste tester bar and café are amazing!
  • Stop by the Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area and hike along the beautiful Sacramento River.

Need A Break? – Get Out of the Car, Have Some Fun & Explore the Region

SHASTA

  • Take an adventure and go hiking at Castle Crags State Park. The views from the top are unimaginable!
  • The weather outside is lovely! Take a walk along many of the trails on the Sacramento River and take in the beautiful wildflowers blooming.
  • Whiskeytown Reservoir is full of trails for hiking, walking, biking, and riding horses. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and explore the area.

TRINITY

  • Check out the Joss House State Historic Park in Weaverville. It’s the oldest continuously used Chinese Temple in California.
  • Explore what the Trinity River has to offer by taking the Trinity River Scenic Byway on Highway 299.
  • For the wine enthusiasts try out Alpen Cellars. Tastings, tours, and much more are available!

SISKIYOU

  • Want to try something new? Experience the beauty of the snow covered surroundings from the seat of a snowmobile.
  • Take a walk or drive through the Victorian town of Yreka. Go antiquing and don’t forget to stop by the Court House!
  • Not ready to give up the snow yet? The Fun Factory is still open! Head up for snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and so much more!

LASSEN

  • There’s still time to play in the snow! Head up towards Lassen Volcanic National Park and you’re bound to find snow!
  • The Susanville Railroad Depot serves as the place to start a leisurely hike or bike ride up the Susan River.
  • The area surrounding Eagle Lake is perfect for wildlife watching opportunities this time of year!

MODOC

  • It’s a great time get outside to view a variety of migrating bird species that can be found at the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge.
  • The Lava Beds National Monument is an adventure for all ages. Explore caves, rock carvings, and so much more!
  • The city of Alturas is known for its history during the pioneering era. Visit the historic museum and shops to gain a better idea of the hardships and goals they faced.

PLUMAS

  • Try your luck prospecting in the Feather River!
  • Want to find some cache? Bring your hand-held GPS device and visit Plumas County, which has an abundance of geocaching locations.
  • It’s the time of the season that the Feather River Scenic Byway looks absolutely gorgeous. Drive along the river and view all the wildlife and spring wildflowers with unlimited colors!

BUTTE

  • Have you ever explored the Sierra Oro Farm Trail? Take an adventure and discover a number of farms, wineries and local producers in Butte County.
  • Do you love historic building? Take a self guided walking tour through downtown Chico, which is filled with historic landmarks.
  • Paradise’s Annual Gold Nugget Days starts 4/22 through 4/25. Join the fun with a parade, barbeque, carnivals, and so much more!

 TEHAMA

  • Civil War Days at Dog Island Park in Red Bluff start this Saturday. Come join the educational fun!
  • Now is the perfect time to enjoy the beautiful blooming wildflowers found throughout the nature trails at Black Butte Lake.
  • Love to fish? Then grab your fishing pole and head for Antelope Creek, Battle Creek or Mill Creek to see what you might catch.

April 11th – April 17th       

SHASTA

  • Did you know that Burney Falls has 100 million gallons of water flowing over it everyday?! Go see it for yourself and hike along their trails.
  • Enjoy an evening sampling some of Anselmo Vineyards wines in a unique wine tasting room, over looking the sprawling countryside.
  • You won’t want to miss Kool April Nights in Redding, so mark your calendars and shine up that hot rod for April 14th-18th.

TRINITY

  • Visit the Courthouse Square in Weaverville. Stop in the old buildings with unique businesses in the historic heart of the once bustling gold rush town.
  • Spend an afternoon walking around the historical town of Lewiston and enjoy the history behind many building dating back to the 1850’s.
  • Visit the Forest Service Station in Weaverville to check out fossilized dinosaur bones, found near the Trinity Dam in 1964.

SISKIYOU

  • Feeling stressed? Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens.
  • Visit the Siskiyou County Courthouse to view different forms of gold found in the area along with the largest gold display south of Alaska.
  • Are you in search of wild trout fishing locations? The Upper Sacramento, McCloud, Klamath, and Scott River offer prime fishing locations.

LASSEN

  • The Big Valley Museum offers endless information and displays of the early settlements of northeastern California.
  • Take a nice stroll or bike ride along the Bizz Johnson Trail that follows the Susan River from Susanville to Westwood along an old rail line.
  • The rugged Fort Sage Off-Highway Vehicle Area offers trails to suit every rider’s ability.

MODOC

  • It’s a great time get outside to view a variety of migrating bird species that can be found at the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Visit Modoc County Historical Museum in Alturas which features artifacts dating back 150 years!
  • Grab a pair of snow shoes and get ready for an adventure to Patterson Lake, which is a pristine, emerald green lake.

PLUMAS

  • Make an appointment to check out the Beckwourth Cabin, where you can learn the history behind thepioneer, Jim Beckwourth.
  • Want to find some cache? Bring your hand-held GPS device and visit Plumas County, which has an abundance of geocaching locations.
  • Explore the great outdoors and breathe some fresh air while exploring the Plumas National Forest.

BUTTE

  • Do you know how bees communicate or how they make honey? Learn how by visiting the Chico Museums exhibit on “The Secret World of Bees.”
  • Have you ever explored Big Chico Creek Canyon? Join the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve on one of their natural history hikes. 
  • Get outside and have fun with the whole family this Saturday by attending, Bikes ‘n Birds, a bike ride through the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area.

 TEHAMA

  • Get ready for an action packed weekend by attending the 89th Annual Red Bluff Round-Up, April 16th-18th.
  • Feel like a kid again by visiting the South Shasta Model Railroad and take a ride on a 59 year old German-built steam locomotive.
  • Visit the Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area to spend a relaxing afternoon fishing, hiking or simply having a picnic.

April 4th – April 10th        

SHASTA

  • The McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park offers stunning views of the Burney Falls and five miles of hiking trails.
  • Enjoy an evening sampling some of Anselmo Vineyards wines in a unique wine tasting room, over looking the sprawling countryside.
  • Take a drive along the Shasta Dam/ Shasta Lake Scenic Byway to experience stunning views of Shasta Lake, Shasta Dam and Mt. Shasta.

TRINITY

  • Enjoy a night out with your loved one at the Whitmore Inn Bed & Breakfast, a Victorian home in the heart of the Historic District of Weaverville.

  • View the 6th highest waterfall in the nation at Feather Falls located in Oroville.
  • Visit the Chico museum and view their changing exhibits focusing on the rich and diverse history and culture of Chico and Butte County.

TEHAMA

  • Drive through the Olive City North on HWY 99 and end in Historic Red Bluff to do a little antiquing! Visit www.tehamatrail.com for more ideas!
  • Take a step back in time by visiting the Tehama County Museum, housed in a historical building full of interesting exhibits.
  • Visit the Payne’s Creek Recreation Area and take a walk along one of their trails to see if you can spot local wildlife in their native habitat.
