24 Things To Do This Week In The Shasta Cascade Region

May 23rd – May 29th   

SHASTA

  • Stop at the Subway Cave near Old Station and take a hike along the Hat Creek Rim Trail. This beautiful trail offers views of three different kinds of volcanoes: a plug dome volcano, a cinder cone, and a shield volcano!
  • Come have fun Memorial Weekend at the Whiskeytown Regatta! This event includes a variety of water sports plus some extras!
  • Castle Crags are composed of tall granite spires that were created by geological events faulting, volcanism, and erosion. Head up to the extraordinary state park for picnicking, camping, hiking, or just a day outdoors.

TRINITY

  • Visit Weaverville, where the La Grange Hydraulic Gold Mine, processed over 100 million yards of gravel to produce $3,500,000 in gold.
  • Take a day trip to Weaverville and visit the Joss House State Historic Par. The Joss House is the oldest continuously used Chinese temple in California.
  • It’s the perfect time to take a drive along the Trinity Heritage Scenic Byway on HWY 3. View mountain lakes, gold rush history, and the Pacific Crest Trail!

SISKIYOU

  • For great bird viewing opportunities visit the Klamath Basin Birding Trail for a chance to see over 350 bird species.
  • Take a day trip to Medicine Lake and view one of the largest shield volcanoes, Medicine Lake Volcano.
  • If you are up for a little adventure, then explore the Shastina Lava Cave also known as Barnum Cave near Weed.

 LASSEN

  • Want a chance to see the second fastest land mammal in the world? Visit the Honey Lake State Wildlife Area to view pronghorn antelope.
  • Pack up the horses and head to the Heart Lake Trailhead, a National Recreation Trail that is 4.7 miles long and has views of Lassen Peak and Brokeoff Mountain.
  • Come see the route gold seekers and covered wagons traveled along by visiting the Lassen Emigrant Trail.

MODOC

  • Take an adventure along the 93 mile Barrel Springs Back Country Byway on HWY
  • Visit the Devils Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory near Alturas, which contains 300,000 acres of habitat for the roaming wild horses.
  • Modoc country is known as “Where the West Still Lives”. Come enjoy the old western traditions and architecture and even visit the Warner Mountains for some obsidian souvenirs!

PLUMAS

  • Frazier Falls is located in the pristine Alpine wilderness of the Lakes Basin recreation area. The trail to the falls is a great picnic site with restrooms.
  • Pack your camera and take a scenic drive through Indian Valley, dotted with ranches and old barns and is beautiful this time of year!
  • Enjoy 17 miles of shoreline at Bucks Lake, perfect for fishing or access a hiking trail into the Bucks Lake Wilderness.

BUTTE

  • Stop into the Butte County Pioneer Memorial Museum, where you can view numerous historic treasures including a doll from the Donner Party.
  • The Silver Dollar Fair in Chico is here 5/26-5/31! The fun includes races, special exhibits daily grounds acts and carnival rides.
  • While visiting or driving through Oroville, try out the new cell phone tours. You’ll have your own tour guide to local attractions in the palm of your hand!

 TEHAMA

  • Explore the Ishi Wilderness located just outside of Red Bluff, which has a variety of trails, caves and pillar lava formations.
  • Come visit Gaumer’s Jewelry & Museum in Red Bluff. It has a beautiful collection of jewelry and a fascinating mineral and mining museum.
  • Check out the Salmon Viewing Plaza in Red Bluff, where you can watch the salmon swim by via television monitors.

SHASTA

  • Take advantage of the beautiful views of Shasta Lake by mountain biking along the Clikapudi Trail, a trail for beginners to moderate riders.
  • If you’ve ever wondered about the mysteries of the universe, then explore the Hat Creek Observatory and attend one of their tours.
  • For a chance to see the rare Clustered Lady’s Slipper orchid visit the Shasta Bally in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

TRINITY

  • Visit Weaverville, where the La Grange Hydraulic Gold Mine, processed over 100 million yards of gravel to produce $3,500,000 in gold.
  • Spend a relaxing weekend in the Alps by camping at Trinity Center, where you can swim, fish, watch wildlife or hike.
  • Stop into the Lee Family Ranch House Folk Art Center, which contains a variety of folk art and exhibits in the old ranch house.

  • In need of a little R and R? Then visit Kelly Lake near Happy Camp, where you can relax by the lake, fish or go on a hike.
  • If you are up for a little adventure, then explore the Shastina Lava Cave also known as Barnum Cave near Weed.

 LASSEN

  • Bike along the seven mile long South Shore Trail at Eagle Lake, all while enjoying the amazing views of the lake.

MODOC

  • Enjoy views of Payne Peak by driving your 4×4 along the Payne Peak Trail and search for petrified wood in Granger Canyon.
  • Bring your binoculars and visit the Goose Lake to view the stunning Harlequin Duck, Eurasian Wigeon and other species of waterfowl.
  • Visit the Devils Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory near Alturas, which contains 300,000 acres of habitat for the roaming wild horses.

PLUMAS

  • Visit the Lake Davis Wildlife Viewing Site, where you can view nesting tundra swans and a variety of other bird species.
  • Pack your camera and take a scenic drive through Indian Valley, dotted with ranches and old barns and is beautiful this time of year!
  • Enjoy 17 miles of shoreline at Bucks Lake, perfect for fishing or access a hiking trail into the Bucks Lake Wilderness.

BUTTE

  • Come see why the Bidwell Park was the perfect filming location of the 1937 original film, Adventures of Robin Hood.
  • Stop into the Butte County Pioneer Memorial Museum, where you can view numerous historic treasures including a doll from the Donner Party.
  • You will be in for a treat by visiting the Little Grass Valley Lake, which has red snow plants that bloom May to July.

 TEHAMA

  • Explore the Ishi Wilderness located just outside of Red Bluff, which has a variety of trails, caves and pillar lava formations.
  • Did you know the South Yolla Bolly Mountain is one of the most prominent peaks in California and is ranked number 10 on the list?
  • Check out the Salmon Viewing Plaza in Red Bluff, where you can watch the salmon swim by via television monitors.

May 9th – May 15th        

SHASTA

  • It’s fishing season again and what better place to flyfish than Hat Creek?! Make a weekend out of it and stay in one of the many campgrounds.
  • Anselmo Vineyards in Shingletown offers wine tasting in their 5-star tasting room open 6 days a week. Make an appointment today!
  • Explore the Root Creek Trail at the Castle Crags State Park, where you can find a variety of the park’s thirteen species of orchids.

TRINITY

  • Take a scenic drive along Highway 36, the Southern Trinity Highway to experience the views of the Yolla Bolla Wilderness Area.
  • Lace up those hiking boots and the hit the trail for Shimmey Lake, a picturesque mountain lake that has views of Ycatapom Peak.
  • The Trinity Alps are some of the most scenic mountain ranges in California and contain 500,000 acres of wilderness area, waiting to be explored.

SISKIYOU

  • Pack up the family and head to the Migratory Bird Festival for free airboat rides and guided bird walks through the refuge, May 15th.
  • Visit Mount Shasta, which is said to be the only place in the world where the Cooke’s Phacelia plant grows.
  • Take an afternoon to explore and drive along the Western Siskiyou County Scenic Byway Loop and you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive Sasquatch.

 LASSEN

  • Visit the Lassen National Forest to view the “king of pines” or Sugar Pines, that produce seeds and sap used by Native American as a food source and medicinal purposes. 
  • Ready to let loose? The Fort Sage Recreation Management Area offers off-highway vehicle areas with a wide variety of terrain.
  • See how many different bird species you can count by visiting the Mountain Meadows Reservoir near Westwood.

MODOC

  • This Saturday is the first day the Fern Cave will be open for tours! Make your reservation today to view the green oasis at Lava Beds National Monument by calling 530-667-8113.
  • See what you can find by exploring the Warner Mountains, which is said to have one of the most unique obsidian deposits in the nation.
  • Head to where the Wild West still exists! Head to the far eastern corner of Modoc County.There you’ll see late 1800’s building still in use.

PLUMAS

  • Take a drive along the Feather River National Scenic Byway for a chance to see up to 100 beautiful, springtime waterfalls.
  • Take a leisurely stroll along the many trails located along Lake Almanor near Chester.
  • Bring your camera and visit Snake Lake for a chance to see the American White Pelican, one of the largest birds in North America.

BUTTE

  • Are you an art fanatic? Cruise through Chico and take your pick of amazing art galleries located throughout the city.
  • Love mandarins? See and learn how this sweet and tasty treat is grown by visiting one of the mandarin farms in Oroville.
  • Stop into Satava Art Glass in Chico, which is filled with artistic creativity and was chosen by the Monterey Bay Aquarium for its realistic glass portrayal of a jellyfish.

 TEHAMA

  • Visit the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina to experience another way of life and sample wine that is made and grown by the monks.
  • Visit “The Olive City” that is rich with history and is also the place where the California Bear State Flag was created.
  • If you’re a car enthusiast then mark your calendar for the 36th Annual River Park Car Show in Red Bluff, June 16th.

May 2nd  – May 8th   

SHASTA

  • Don’t miss out on the Celtic Renaissance fair starting May 1st and 2nd! Let the entertainment and atmosphere transport you back to the late 1500s Scotland.
  • Bring your flashlight and a warm jacket and take an adventure through the Subway Caves in Old Station off of HWY 89
  • Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is a beautiful place to go hiking or biking among the many trails offered. Many of the trails tour historic sections of the park and Gold Rush Era buildings. Mines and miner’s ditches have been seen!

TRINITY

  • Stop to see the Natural Bridge in Hayfork. It is historically interesting and an unusual natural phenomenon with strong links to the Native Americans that once inhabited the area. The bridge is a limestone arch across a narrow ravine by nature.
  • Weaverville provides a nostalgic step back in time. Visit this gold-rush era town and explore the Joss House Weaverville State Historic Park.
  • Lewiston Lake is 97% full and still rising. Stop by to view the beautiful scenery and find out for yourself why this lake is known as the flyfisherman’s, canoer’s, and camper’s paradise!

SISKIYOU

  • Don’t miss the living history and educational event going on at the Lava Beds National Monument, May 8th.
  • For the locomotive enthusiast, stay the night at the Dunsmuir’s Railroad Park Resort. You can eat on a train and sleep in a caboose!
  • The Scott Valley Pleasure Park Rodeo in Etna is taking place May 2nd! Come join the fun and don’t forget your cowboy hat!

 LASSEN

  • Take a hike or bike ride along the Bizz Johnson Trail starting at Susanville and ending in Westwood along an old rail line.
  • Honey Lake is excellent for wildlife viewing and birdwatching with opportunities to see hundreds of migratory and nesting waterfowl, birds of prey, and passerines, sandhill cranes, beavers, pronghorn antelope, and deer.
  • You can experience a number of recreational opportunities at the Susanville Ranch Park, which has 22 miles of trails.

MODOC

  • Check out the Applegate Trail, which is said to be the earliest blazed road through the Modoc  area and is part of the California National Historic Trail system.
  • Have you ever seen petrified wood? Come explore Modoc County, which has a number of locations, where you can find petrified wood.
  • The Modoc National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1960 to manage and protect migratory waterfowl. It provides fishing, hunting, photography, and educational opportunities!

PLUMAS

  • Want to witness something unusual? Visit the Butterfly Valley Botanical Area for your chance to see the California Pitcher Plant, a rare inspect eating plant.
  • Hike along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail which is 2,650 miles in length and begins in Mexico and continues all the way to Canada.
  • If you want to see an amazing piece of architecture, then visit the Nakoma Resort, a 1924 design by Frank Lloyd Wright.

BUTTE

  • Got chocolate? Get your chocolate fix and much more by attending the 5th Annual Paradise Chocolate Festival, May 8th.
  • Love mandarins? See and learn how this sweet and tasty treat is grown by visiting one of the mandarin farms in Oroville.
  • Witness the sixth tallest waterfall in the United States by hiking the Feather Falls National Recreation Trail.

 TEHAMA

  • Take a trip out to the Sacramento River Discovery Center in Red Bluff where they feature interactive displays and tours!
  • You won’t be disappointed by visiting Gaumer’s Jewelry & Museum, with their beautiful jewelry and fascinating mineral and mining museum.
  • If you’re a fan of old cars then don’t miss the May Madness Car Show in Corning, May 7th & 8th.
