24 Things To Do This Week In The Shasta Cascade Region

June 27th – July 3rd         

SHASTA

  • Load up the horses and explore the Kanaka Peak Loop trail at the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area to enjoy beautiful scenery.
  • Visit the Burney Basin Days event to taste great BBQ, listen to live music, view an antique tractor show and watch the “crowning jewel” fireworks display, July 1-4.
  • There will be two awesome fireworks displays taking place that you won’t want to miss in Anderson, July 3 and Redding’s Freedom Festival, July 4.

TRINITY

  • Discover Trinity County’s hidden secret, Ruth Lake, which has a variety of campsites and recreational activities!
  • Enjoy scenic views of Trinity County while whitewater rafting along the Trinity River with friends or family. Contact us more information!
  • Bring your camera and hike through the Trinity Alps for a chance to see Sapphire Lake, a pristine alpine lake.

SISKIYOU

  • Pack a couple flashlights, wear sturdy shoes and invite a few friends to explore Pluto’s Cave, a 190,000 year old lava tube.
  • Hike the trailhead of Black Butte to enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Shasta, Mt. Eddy, Mt. McLaughlin, just to name a few.

 LASSEN

  • Bring the family and attend the Paul Bunyan Mountain & Blues Festival in Westwood, which will have popular blues bands, a logging show and much more, July 4.
  • Visit Lassen Volcanic National Park for a chance to view the Lassen Selowskia flower that only grows in rocky alpine environments.
  • Ready to let loose? The Fort Sage Recreation Management Area offers off-highway vehicle areas with a wide variety of terrain.

MODOC

  • Come celebrate America’s Independence by attending the Fandango Days Celebration in Alturas, which will have fireworks, BBQ, a classic car show and many more activities, July 2-4.
  • Pack some water and take a scenic hike to Mill Creek Falls, Modoc County’s largest waterfall, which can be accessed from Mill Creek Falls Campground.
  • Take a scenic drive along the Surprise Valley/Barrel Springs Back Country Byway and walk the beach of a prehistoric lake.

PLUMAS

  • Experience a spectacular fireworks display by attending the 4th of July Festivities in Chester, also be hosting a 5K run, July 2-4.
  • Invite some friends to listen to great music by attending the High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, July 1-4. http://dld.bz/hEdU
  • Take an adventure at Plumas-Eureka State Park. It’s a 4,500 acre park full of historical sites and recreational opportunities!

BUTTE

  • Travel along one of California’s earliest routes over the Sierra’s by driving the Feather River Scenic Byway. http://dld.bz/hZDf
  • Pack up your bike and hit the Bradford B. Freeman Bike Trail, which offers 44 miles of scenic off-road recreational riding.
  • Visit Cherokee, which was once home to the largest and most famous hydraulic gold mine in the world and was even visited by Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes.

TEHAMA

  • Take a drive along Historic Route 99. This route began as a horse and stagecoach trail extending from Mexico to Canada!
  • Explore the wonderful city of Red Bluff. View the beautiful Victorian homes, go antiquing, or even have a picnic at the Red Bluff Diversion Dam Recreation Area.
  • Take an adventure along the Sacramento Bend Area. Visitors can hike or horseback-ride the Yana trail, or lazily float down the Sacramento River in a raft or canoe.

SHASTA

  • For the wildflower enthusiast head up to Castle Crags State Park and take a short one mile walk on Root Creek Trail. It is the home of 13 species of orchids!
  • Get out this Thursday night and join the excitement at the Redding Marketfest, held every Thursday during summer. Marketfest weaves musical guests, a farmer’s and artisan market, children’s activities, and incredible food and drinks into one fabulous affair.

TRINITY

  • If you’re up for a little adventure, then bring a flashlight and explore the Oak Hollow Creek Cave near Happy Camp.

 LASSEN

  • Do you love classic cars? If so, then come attend the 20th Annual Main Street Cruise Classic Car Show ‘N Shine, June 25th in Susanville.
  • Not ready to let winter go just yet? Head up to Lassen Volcanic National Park to have a little fun in the snow before it melts!
  • Ready to let loose? The Fort Sage Recreation Management Area offers off-highway vehicle areas with a wide variety of terrain.

MODOC

  • Visit the Tule Lake War Relocation Center National Monument and learn about the history of the internment camp, located in Newell.
  • Pack some water and take a scenic hike to Mill Creek Falls, Modoc County’s largest waterfall, which can be accessed from Mill Creek Falls Campground.
  • For those cowboys out there you won’t want to miss the Modoc Super Bull in Cedarville on June 26th!

PLUMAS

  • Sample micro brews while listening to great music at the Chester Park, June 26th for the A Few Brews & A Banjo event.
  • Attend an exciting outdoor educational tour on natural resource management, history and culture of the northern Sierra Nevada offered by the Sierra Institute. (530) 284-1022

SHASTA

  • Explore the mysterious and unique Subway Caves near Old Station, but be sure to bring a warm jacket, flashlight and wear sturdy shoes.
  • Invite a friend to the Shasta District Fair going on June 16-20, which will have a carnival, livestock exhibits, entertainment and much more.
  • Stop into the Fort Crook Museum, which is filled with antiques, Indian artifacts, early farm implements and even has a blacksmith’s shop.

 TRINITY

  • Discover Trinity Center’s 19th century ranch era, along with artifacts and various photographs by visiting the Scotts Museum in Weaverville.
  • Discover Trinity County’s hidden secret, Ruth Lake, which has a variety of campsites and recreational activities!
  • Relax and get away from the stress of everyday life by renting a houseboat on the third largest lake in California, Trinity Lake.

SISKIYOU

  • Load up the family for a little weekend fun and head to Yreka for Gold Rush Days, where you can witness a shoot-out reenactment or stroll through the antique peddler’s street fair, June 19.
  • Enjoy 10 acres of blooming lavender at the Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms, where you can sample Lavender Lemonade and enjoy breathe taking views of Mt. Shasta.
  • If you’re up for a little adventure, then bring a flashlight and explore the Oak Hollow Creek Cave near Happy Camp.

 LASSEN

  • The rugged Fort Sage Off-Highway Vehicle Area offers trails to suit every riding ability. With 22,000 acres of public land and 90 miles of routes the fun won’t ever stop!

  • Ready to let loose? The Fort Sage Recreation Management Area offers off-highway vehicle areas with a wide variety of terrain.

MODOC

  • The Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge offers a great place to view nesting American white pelicans, so make sure to pack your camera.
  • The Blue Door Flat area offers wildlife and wildflower viewing opportunities, including songbird and a variety of wild flower species.
  • Load up your mountain bike and head to the Woodland Jurassic Ride, which offers 8.6 miles of trails and has great vistas to stop to rest.

PLUMAS

  • If you’re up for a challenge, then register for the 28th Annual Mile High Century in Chester, June 19th.

SHASTA

  • Try something new by renting a stand up paddleboard from Lost Coast Surfboards to experience the beauty of Whiskeytown Lake.
  • Explore the Yani trail, which has traces of ancient Indian villages, fishing and hunting camps and circular stone features.

 TRINITY

  • Take advantage of an amazing and free opportunity to attend an interpretive Trinity River float trip, June 12. Contact Jeff (530) 252-5332.
  • Bring your camera and hike through the Trinity Alps for a chance to see Sapphire Lake, a pristine alpine lake.

SISKIYOU

  • Visit the town of Montague, where the famous baseball player, Babe Ruth would fly into to go on fishing vacations.
  • Bring your fishing pole and try your luck fishing the McCloud reservoir or just enjoy the beautiful lake views.
  • Take a ride on the Blue Goose train that will take you on a scenic excursion through Historic Yreka and the “Old West” town of Montague.

 LASSEN

  • The Bizz Johnson Trail is an outdoorsman’s dream! It offers 25.4 miles of bicycling/hiking/equestrian trails, fishing, and camping!
  • Those with adventurous hearts can explore the Nobles Immigrant National Historic Trail or Buckhorn Back-Country Byway.
  • Get out the dusty fishing rod and head over to Eagle Lake. Try your luck at catching a couple of the world-famous Eagle Lake trout. Not to mention all the other recreational activities offered!

MODOC

  • Dust off the old mountain bike and head to Devil’s Garden Mountain Bike Area near Alturas to bike a total of 5.3 miles of various turfs!
  • Check the weather, pack some snacks and travel along the Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway to view unrivaled volcanic features, natural wonders, and Indian lore.
  • Take an adventure at Lava Beds National Monument, where you can go caving and learn about the Modoc Indians!

PLUMAS

  • Visit the charming town of Graeagle and attend their Taste of Mohawk event, where you can sample a variety of special dishes, June 12 from 1-4pm.
  • Plumas Country is full of wildflower viewing opportunities. They bloom in every color imaginable and each season brings a new display of vibrant colors.
  • Are you a fan of historic locomotives? Bring your camera and come see “Dinky” a rustic compact century-old steam locomotive.

BUTTE

  • Do you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to tools? Think again and check out the collection at Bolt’s Antique Tool Museum!
  •  Enjoy a variety of photographs and other artifacts housed in the Gridley Historical and Wildlife Museum to experience the town’s history.
  • For the avid antique collector head down to Paradise where they offer more antique shops and collectible locations than any other town in the state.

 TEHAMA

  • Go out for a picnic overlooking the Sacramento River at the William B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park in Red Bluff.
  • Dust off your mountain bike and hit the trails at the Lake Red Bluff Recreation Area.
  • Interested in learning about the history and culture of Tehama County? Visit Kelly Griggs Museum which features local Indian artifacts, antique furniture, and photographs from the county’s past.

May 30th – June 5th   

SHASTA

  • Stop at the Subway Cave near Old Station and take a hike along the Hat Creek Rim Trail. This beautiful trail offers views of three different kinds of volcanoes: a plug dome volcano, a cinder cone, and a shield volcano!
  • Come visit the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown and view the roaming wild horses in the picturesque Old Wild West atmosphere.
  • Come discover fascinating geological formations, which can be seen along the Spattercone Trail, a 1 ½ mile trail.

 TRINITY

  • Lewiston is a former gold mining town. Stroll across the Trinity River on the historic single-lane Old Lewiston Bridge.
  • With over 500,000 acres, the Trinity Alps Wilderness is the largest wilderness area in California. Backpack or ride a horse into more than 60 alpine lakes on well-maintained trails.
  • If you’re an antique collector then you won’t want to miss the Old Lewiston Peddler’s Faire, June 5.

SISKIYOU

  • Grab your camera and head to Klamath Basin NWR. The varied wildlife habitants are a photographers delight with endless opportunities!
  • Take a nice walk down to Mossbrae falls in Dunsmuir. These beautiful falls are about 50 feet high and offer great photo opportunities!
  • If you’re a bird enthusiast and want to get up close and personal, then check into the Canoe Trail at Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

 LASSEN

  • The Bizz Johnson Trail is an outdoorsman’s dream! It offers 25.4 miles of bicycling/hiking/equestrian trails, fishing, and camping!
  • Pack up the horses and head to the Heart Lake Trailhead, a National Recreation Trail that is 4.7 miles long and has views of Lassen Peak and Brokeoff Mountain.
  • Come enjoy the second largest natural lake in California, Eagle Lake. There’s fishing, camping, swimming, and so much more!

MODOC

  • Take a historic walking or driving tour of Alturas! Visit old west buildings still in us today dating back to the late 1800s.
  • Dust off the old mountain bike and head to Devil’s Garden Mountain Bike Area near Alturas to bike a total of 5.3 miles of various turfs!
  • Modoc country is known as “Where the West Still Lives”. Come enjoy the old western traditions and architecture and even visit the Warner Mountains for some obsidian souvenirs!

PLUMAS

  • Experience up close the railroad history of the Feather River country and Northern California and the Portola Railroad Museum.
  • Hike or bike Lake Almanor Recreation Trail which follows the lake’s scenic west shore.
  • Plumas Country is full of wildflower viewing opportunities. They bloom in every color imaginable and each season brings a new display of vibrant colors.

BUTTE

  • Discover what life was like back in the 1850s by visiting the Gold Nugget Museum in Paradise
  • Visit the USDA Plant Introduction Center in Chico for a chance to see the oldest producing “father” and “mother” kiwi in the nation.
  • For the avid antique collector head down to Paradise where they offer more antique shops and collectible locations than any other town in the state.

 TEHAMA

  • Get away from it all this weekend and head to the lodge at Dye Creek Ranch, a working ranch situated on 37,650 acres.
  • Stop by the Sacramento River Discovery Center in Red Bluff and attend a guided bird walk June 5th from 8-10am. (530) 527-1196
  • Go out for a picnic overlooking the Sacramento River at the William B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park in Red Bluff.
