24 Things To Do This Week In The Shasta Cascade Region

October 24th  – October 30th              

SHASTA

  • Did you know that Whiskeytown National Recreation Area has multiple waterfalls? Head to the Whiskeytown Visitor Center to get detailed maps of the fun hiking trails that lead to these beautiful falls!
  • Don’t forget to stop at Hawes Haunted Acres before the seasons over! Have fun painting pumpkins, going through the haunted corn maze, getting frightened in the Dread Shed, and so much more!! http://bit.ly/bY7sKl
  • Visit the West Prospect Fire Lookout to learn how forest fires are detected and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of Lassen Park and Lassen Nat’l Forest.

TRINITY

  • With over 500,000 acres, the Trinity Alps Wilderness is the largest wilderness area in California. Backpack or ride a horse into more than 60 alpine lakes on well-maintained trails.
  • Bring your binoculars and bird book and head to Hayfork to see if you can spot some of the 188 bird species found in the area.
  • Come see the Natural Bridge of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest located near Hayfork, which is a unique and naturally formed limestone bridge.

SISKIYOU

  • Take a drive back in time with the self-guided tour through the Victorian town of Yreka. Don’t forget to stop at the courthouse which is home to the largest gold collection south of Alaska!
  • Take a self-guided or horticulturalist-led group tour of the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens and you’ll be mesmerized by the gardens beauty.
  • Now that cooler weather is starting to set in it’s a perfect time to hike along the Pacific Crest Trail and enjoy the fall scenery!

LASSEN

  • Located near the Lassen Historical Museum is Roop’s Fort, a place where visitors can step into the past and see just how the early settlers lived.
  • Get out your fishing pole and try your luck at Eagle Lake. Fish for the famous eagle trout, which are larger than the average trout and are only found at Eagle Lake!
  • Ready to let loose? The Fort Sage Recreation Management Area offers off-highway vehicle areas with a wide variety of terrain.

MODOC

  • Head to the Warner Mountains, where you can collect obsidian from any of the four designated collection sites.
  • If you’re up for a challenge then head to Woodland Jurassic Mountain Bike Area, which offers 8.6 miles of dirt road and great vistas of the Warner Mountains.
  • View the outdoors and wildlife from an up close perspective at Modoc Wildlife Refuge in Alturas.

PLUMAS

  • If you’re looking for a short hike, then consider the Big Bald Rock Trail that offers views of the Sacramento Valley and Lake Oroville.
  • Enjoy the outdoors via horseback! Plumas County offers a variety of horseback riding opportunities to see the beautiful mountain lakes and forests, whether it be an hour long ride or an overnight pack trip.
  • The Plumas Eureka State Park & Museum features mining relics and a restored stamp mill. This 4,500 acre park has several hiking trails leading to four lakes in the park and a campground!

BUTTE

  • Stop by Paradise and experience all the fun things to do! There’s a Maidu exhibit, Nuggetville (a replica of an old western town), a walk-through mine, and not to mention all the antique stores. Who knows what treasures you’ll come across!
  • Visit Chico and experience Artoberfest, which will feature more than 120 events in the whole month of October! http://dld.bz/wCfU
  • What?! A yo-yo museum?? Yes! There’s a National Yo-Yo Museum in Chico. Great idea for a quirky family destination!

TEHAMA

  • Pack some water and head for the Ides Cove National Recreation Trail, an 11.8 mile trail that leads to the mountain formerly known as Mount Linn.
  • Explore the city of Red Bluff. View beautiful Victorian homes, go antiquing, or have a picnic at the Red Bluff Diversion Dam Recreation Area.
  • Interested in learning about the history and culture of Tehama County? Visit Kelly Griggs Museum which features local Indian artifacts, antique furniture, and photographs from the county’s past.

SHASTA

  • Stop at the Subway Cave near Old Station and take a hike along the Hat Creek Rim Trail. This beautiful trail offers views of three different kinds of volcanoes: a plug dome volcano, a cinder cone, and a shield volcano!
  • Get ready for a creepy/scary event, “Beneath an Autumn Moon” at Shasta State Historic Park, Oct 22! Walk through the cemetery full of Shasta Counties pioneers and learn about their lives! Call 530-243-8194 for reservations ($5 per person)
  • For all those that have been affected by Breast Cancer, don’t miss the pink Sundial Bridge to celebrate Think Pink Day, Oct 21!

TRINITY

  • Discover Trinity Center’s 19th century ranch era, along with artifacts and various photographs by visiting the Scotts Museum in Weaverville.
  • Drive along the Trinity Heritage Scenic Byway for amazing views of the Trinity Alps, Trinity Lake and historic towns!http://bit.ly/a4S881

SISKIYOU

LASSEN

  • Visit Lassen Volcanic National Park for a chance to view the Lassen Selowskia flower that only grows in rocky alpine environments.
  • Take a hike, horseback ride or bike ride along the 25 mile Bizz Johnson Trail. It is one of the best “rails to trails” conversions in California.

MODOC

  • Learn what life might have been like for the Pit River, Modoc and Paiute Indians by visiting the Modoc County Historical Museum in Alturas.
  • Visit Cedarville and checkout the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon-Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, where little has changed since the pioneer times.
  • Visit the Tule Lake War Relocation Center National Monument and learn about the history of the internment camp, located in Newell.

PLUMAS

  • Enjoy a great drive along the Feather River Scenic Byway on Hwy 70. View the beautiful fall color palette from the seat of your car. It’s a great time to stop and have a picnic, too!
  • Did you know you can rent a vintage diesel locomotive? The Western Pacific Railroad Museum offers a “Run-A-Locomotive” program, where you can rent a locomotive for up to 2 hours.

BUTTE

TRINITY

MODOC

  • Dust off the old mountain bike and head to Devil’s Garden Mountain Bike Area near Alturas to bike a total of 5.3 miles of various turfs!
  • Along the Buckhorn Backcountry Byway you will find volcanic geography, small valleys, fields of silver-blue sagebrush, scattered juniper along with wild horses and burros feeding on these beautiful landscapes.
  • Take a historic walking or driving tour of Alturas! Visit old west buildings still in us today dating back to the late 1800s.

PLUMAS

  • Drive along the Feather River Scenic Byway and view the beautiful color palette of the fall foliage!
  • Visit the Plumas Eureka State Park and Museum in Johnsville. This indoor/outdoor complex includes mining relics and a restored stamp mill.
  • Spend a relaxing weekend at the Butt Valley Reservoir, where visitors can take in the clean mountain air, enjoy fishing, camping or hike along the Claremont Trail.

BUTTE

  • Visit the USDA Plant Introduction Center in Chico for a chance to see the oldest producing “father” and “mother” kiwi in the nation.

TEHAMA
