24 Things to Do in the Shasta Cascade Region

SHASTA

  • This week, the Spring 2011 Home & Garden Expo on Mar.25th-27th at the Shasta Fairgrounds 1890 Briggs St. Anderson.
  • The Sacramento River Rail Trail provides joggers, hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders with a tranquil escape along the Sacramento River.
  • Take a 2 hour guided tour at the Shasta Caverns and experience the adventure and mystery of the caverns.

TRINITY

  • Bigfoot Scenic Byways offers a new adventure to your trip. View engaging scenery and have a picnic along one of the rivers!
  • Explore the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park. It’s the oldest continuously used Chinese Temple!
  • For the fishing enthusiast, head to Trinity River which offers steelhead, salmon, and browns.

SISKIYOU

  • Get out and see the country with the State of Jefferson Scenic Byway. View the rugged Klamath River, steep forested mountains and so much more!
  • Take a ride back in time while driving through the self-tour of Yreka. The Victorian houses will have you mesmerized!
  • Take a drive along the Smith River Scenic Byway which runs along the Smith River, also known as one of the crown jewels of the National Wild & Scenic River System.

LASSEN

  • Take a nice stroll or bike ride along the Bizz Johnson Trail that follows the Susan River from Susanville to Westwood along an old rail line.
  • The Big Valley Museum offers endless information and displays of the early settlements of northeastern California.
  • See what kind of local wildlife you might see by visiting the Honey Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

MODOC

  • The Modoc Nat’l Wildlife Refuge has attracted more than 250 species of birds thus far on its 7000 acres .
  • Check out the Art Center in Alturas and the Upstairs Gallery at Warner Mt. Weavers in Cedarville when in Modoc Co.
  • Enjoy Louieville, a real-life setting of authentic log cabins and old structures at the Modoc Dist. Fairgrounds.

PLUMAS

  • Plumas County pioneer Jim Beckwourth’s refurbished hotel and trading post, circa 1852. A 1850’s refurbished log cabin is located in Portola.
  • Visit the Plumas Eureka State Park and Museum in Johnsville. This indoor/outdoor complex includes mining relics and a restored stamp mill
  • View all the greenery while taking the Feather River Scenic Byway. Take in the railroad history, historic river canyons, and the Northern Sierra Golf Country all from the comfort of your car.

BUTTE

  • For a special treat go to the Chico Air Museum and enjoy inside and outside aircraft displays, etc.  Thurs. – Sat.
  • The North Forebay of Lake Oroville is ranked as the best sailing and windsurfing north of the Bay Area.
  • While in Oroville stop by the Hewitt Park Steam Engines on Daryl Porter between Baldwin and Park Ave.

TEHAMA

  • Have you treated yourself to a day of exploring the beauties of Black Butte Lake in Corning?  It’s a gem!
  • Come discover where Yahi Yana Indians lived their lives for over 3,000 years by visiting the Ishi Wilderness Area.
  • Dust off your mountain bike and hit the trails at the Lake Red Bluff Recreation Area.

SHASTA

TRINITY

  • Take a day and explore the award-winning winery and vineyard, Alpen Cellars, in a scenic mountain valley. They offer tours and tasting. For more info call 530-266-9513.
  • Wanting a great day hike?  Try Stuarts Fork, which is easily passable, not too much elevation, has good fishing along the creek & is clearly marked. Description and exact location at
  • DYK: Trinity Lake, with 16,000 surface acres, and 147 miles of shoreline, is the 3rd largest lake in California.

SISKIYOU

  • Yreka’s Greenhorn Park is a great local for strolling around the reservoir, bird watching, fishing and bicycling.
  • Feel the rush at Mt. Shasta Ski Park.  Due to new grooming equipment the downhill ride is even better.
  • Learn the history of previous Native American tribes by visiting the Native American Heritage Park in Yreka.

LASSEN

  • If you’re a bird watcher, consider the Ash Creek Wildlife Refuge.  This is the time from now until spring to get your fill.
  • Those with adventurous php?id=7044 hearts can explore the Nobles Immigrant National Historic Trail or Buckhorn Back-Country Byway.
  • The rugged Fort Sage Off-Highway Vehicle Area offers trails to suit every riding ability.  

MODOC

  • The Modoc Nat’l Wildlife Refuge says, it’s prime time to see the birds, those nested and those flying in.
  • The Modoc River Center offers a showcase of natural resources and the effects of watershed conservation on the community.
  • Self guided canoe trails are offered at Tule Lake Upper Klamath Refuge. Open all year!

PLUMAS

  • For all your winter sports needs, including snowshoeing & cross-country skiing, check this site:
  • Let loose and have some fun by snowmobiling the many miles of trails accessible by any of the five staging areas near Chester
  • Take your camera or bike on a scenic drive around the valley’s east of Greenville and north of Taylorsville.

BUTTE

  • For spectacular views of Butte Creek Canyon take your camera and go to Lookout Point along the Skyway in Paradise.
  • Give yourself a teat and visit Oroville’s Grey Fox award-winning Winery. Open weekends noon-5 pm.
  • Visit Chico and tour the Bidwell Mansion SHP, a beautiful three story, 26 room Victorian House Museum!

  • Come check out the historic Courthouse Square right in the heart of downtown Weaverville.

SISKIYOU

  • For quality local art visit Liberty Arts in Yreka where the exhibits change monthly.
  • For an historic treat walk the downtown self-guided tour starting at Minor St. in Yreka.  You’ll see 75+ American Gothic & Victorian homes plus many historical building dating back to the 1880’s.
  • Night Rail Jam at Mt. Shasta Ski Park March 26th. Judges and awards. Upper Lodge registration at 2:30pm.

LASSEN

  • Spend an afternoon cross-country skiing the trails offered at the Colby Mountain Winter Recreation Area
  • Lassen Historical Museum in Susanville showcases artifacts and old time lumbering equipment. It’s also adjacent to the oldest structure in Susanville’s history
  • Susanville Historic Train Depot is the trailhead for the Bizz Johnson Trail. Take a step back into history and view historic photographs of railroad and logging trains that rolled through town.

MODOC

  • DYK: Burnt Lava Flow, Medicine Lake Glass Flow & Glass Mountain Glass Flow are all located in Modoc Nat’l Forest.
