Need A Break? – Get Out of the Car, Have Some Fun & Explore the Region
July 17th – July 23rd
SHASTA
- Explore the wonders of the scenic Whiskeytown Nat’l Recreation Area for hiking, swimming, waterfalls, boating & more.
- Shasta State Historic Park is a great little day trip. Visit the old jail house that is now a museum open Thur-Sun 10am-5pm. Walk through the cemetery and old buildings. Great place for a picnic!
- Lassen Volcanic National Park is now open! Take a drive through the park and see all the amazing volcanic geography.
TRINITY
- Eight miles north of Trinity Center is historic Coffee Creek. Not far from the end of Coffee Creek Rd. is Caribous Lake, the largest lake in the Trinity Alps and well worth the short hike in.
- Take a trip back into early Trinity County history by visiting the Jake Jackson Museum on Main St. in Weaverville.
- Make this summer one to remember by whitewater rafting down the scenic Trinity River with friends and family.
SISKIYOU
- The Upper McCloud River boasts three spectacular waterfalls only five miles east of town on highway 89 at Fowler’s Campground.
- Lake Siskiyou, a few miles from Mt. Shasta, has great fishing, camping, hiking, boating, swimming, view gazing and simply relaxing in a beautiful environment.
- There is much to see at the Fort Jones Museum, including a rare ceremonial white deer skin, a “rain rock” and a variety of Indian and Pioneer artifacts
LASSEN
- Don’t miss the Lassen County Fair in Susanville, July 20-24. It should be a humdinger this year with lots to do and see.
- Bicycling, equestrian, running and walking enthusiasts will certainly enjoy the Bizz Johnson Trail between Susanville and Westwood.
- Eagle Lake, off Hwy 139 north of Susanville offers fishing, a convenient boat launch, marina, swimming beach, picnic areas and interpretive programs.
MODOC
- Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is a mecca for bird watchers. The refuge’s variety of habitats attracts many species of birds.
- Enjoy views of Payne Peak off Hwy 299 near Alturas by driving your 4×4 along the Payne Peak Trail and search for petrified wood in Granger Canyon.
- Take a step back in time by visiting Surprise Valley on Hwy299, which is filled with history and a number of historic homes and buildings.
PLUMAS
- Plumas County boasts hundreds of campsites and RV campgrounds, many of them in alpine lake and forested streamside settings.
- Since the weather is warming up well you might consider cooling off at Indian Falls, a short walk off Hwy. 89 south of Crescent Mills.
- Research the town’s origins on Greenville’s historic downtown walking tour. (Brochure available)
BUTTE
- Treat yourself to a historic walking tour of downtown Oroville. Among other things, you’ll see the Chinese Museum and Pioneer Museum.
- Warren McCutcheon, is believed to be the 1st casualty of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. See his story at the Biggs-Gridley Cemetery.
- Driving into Paradise on the Skyway from Chico offers great views of Butte Creek Canyon, called the “Little Grand Canyon”.
TEHAMA
- Pack some water and head for the Ides Cove National Recreation Trail in the Klamath Mountains, an 11.8 mile trail that leads to the mountain formerly known as Mount Linn.
- Explore the Manton area in eastern Tehama Co. for a tour of the wineries there. The quality of the wine may surprise you.
- Fire Station One’s museum on Antelope Blvd features a little bit of everything chronicling the last century of Red Bluff’s fire department.

SHASTA
- Are you looking to cool off for a bit? The Subway Caves in Old Station are 20,000 year old lava tubes! The caves always offer surprisingly cool temperatures in the hot summer months. Bring a flashlight, jacket, and sturdy shoes.

TRINITY
- Bring your binoculars and bird book and head to Hayfork to see if you can spot some of the 188 bird species found in the area.
- Discover Trinity County’s hidden secret, Ruth Lake, which has a variety of campsites and recreational activities!
- Walk the streets of the historic town of Weaverville with its beautiful scenery and explore the local unique shops and boutiques.
SISKIYOU
- Take a self-guided or horticulturalist-led group tour of the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens and you’ll be mesmerized by the gardens beauty.
- If you’re a bird enthusiast and want to get up close and personal, then check into the Canoe Trail at Tule Lake NWR.
- Haven’t seen enough of the Northern California scenery? Check out the Bigfoot Scenic Byway HWY 96. This is a byway of discovery covering wild & scenic canyons, legendary Bigfoot lore, and Native American & Gold Rush history!
LASSEN
- Those with adventurous hearts can explore the Nobles Immigrant National Historic Trail or Buckhorn Back-Country Byway.
- Where can you see live volcanic activity? Come take an adventure at Lassen Volcanic National Park! View bubbling mud pots, sulfur works, and amazing waterfalls!
- Get out your fishing pole and try your luck at Eagle Lake. Fish for the famous eagle trout, which are larger than the average trout and are only found at Eagle Lake!
MODOC
- Visit Cedarville and checkout the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon-Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, where little has changed since the pioneer times.
- If you’re up for a challenge then head to Woodland Jurassic Mountain Bike Area near Alturas, which offers 8.6 miles of dirt road and great vistas of the Warner Mountains.
- View a variety of wildlife by visiting the Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge and a chance to view nesting double-crested cormorants.
PLUMAS
- Enjoy the outdoors via horseback! Plumas County offers a variety of horseback riding opportunities to see the beautiful mountain lakes and forests, whether it be an hour long ride or an overnight pack trip.
- Did you know you can rent a vintage diesel locomotive? The Western Pacific Railroad Museum offers a “Run-A-Locomotive” program, where you can rent a locomotive for up to 2 hours.
- Spend a relaxing weekend at the Butt Valley Reservoir, where visitors can take in the clean mountain air, enjoy fishing, camping or hike along the Claremont Trail.
BUTTE
- Visit the Noble Orchard Company that has a historic packing shed from the 1930s and is the last producing orchard in Paradise. (530) 877-4784
- What?! A yo-yo museum?? Yes! There’s a National Yo-Yo Museum in Chico. Great idea for a quirky family destination!
- Visit Lake Oroville, California’s 2nd largest reservoir, and try out their floating campgrounds! A boat is needed to access them, but you can rent one of those at their marina. Call (530)538-2219 for more information.
TEHAMA
- Go out for a picnic overlooking the Sacramento River at the William B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park in Red Bluff. Take a walk throughout the park and view an old blacksmith shop, a barn, and much more history.
- Explore the City of Red Bluff. View beautiful Victorian homes, go antiquing, or have a picnic at the Red Bluff Diversion Dam Recreation Area.
- Interested in learning about the history and culture of Tehama County? Visit Kelly Griggs Museum which features local Indian artifacts, antique furniture, and photographs from the county’s past.
