24 Things To Do This Week In The Shasta Cascade Region

September 25th – October 1st

SHASTA

  • What better place to enjoy a day of fishing than Hat Creek.  You may even treat youself to one of the cabins or campgrounds along the creek.
  • Fall is a breathtaking time of year out at Whiskeytown Lake. It’s still warm enough to swim, boat, kayak or hike the many trails.
  • Step back into history and explore the quaint historic town of French Gulch off of Hwy 299.

TRINITY

  • Discover Trinity Center’s 19th century ranch era, along with artifacts and various photographs by visiting the Scotts Museum in Weaverville.
  • Consider a back packing trip to Tangle Blue Lake, a 4 mile trail that leads to a breathtaking alpine lake with campsites and mountain meadows.  Going north on Highway 3, access begins about 2-3 miles up Scott Mt. on the left.  A map is very important.
  • Early fall is the perfect time to explore the many lakes, creeks, and hiking opportunities throughout Trinity County.  The possibilities are endless.

SISKIYOU

  • Enjoy northern Siskiyou County, which encompasses Highway 96 and parallels the Klamath River.
  • For bicycling near Mt. Shasta, try Panther Meadows trail (Old Ski Bowl) off of Everitt Memorial Highway, the “Circle of Mt. Shasta”.
  • Visit the Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum exhibits in the old courthouse in Weed to learn about their life in earlier days.

LASSEN

  • See if you can spot a wild horse while driving along the Buckhorn Back Country Byway and enjoy the scenic views from the comfort of your 4-wheel drive vehicle.
  • Take a hike, horseback ride or bike ride along the 25 mile Bizz Johnson Trail. It is one of the best “rails to trails” conversions in California.

MODOC

  • Get away from it all and camp along the Pit River, the largest river in northeastern California, which offers a variety of recreational activities.
  • Cressler-Bonner Trading Post is located in Cedarville & still stands today. It was the first trading post in Modoc County and was originally located there by a man named Townsend in 1865. State Historical Landmark No. 14.
  • Explore The River Center in Alturas, a hands-on resource for educating visitors about the benefits of a healthy watershed.

PLUMAS

  • Treat yourself to the Cowboy Poetry Show Oct. 1st in the town of Vinton off Hwy. 70.  Times are 1:30 & 7:00 PM.
  • Join the fun at the Taylorsville 53rd Fall Festival on Oct. 1st in Taylorsville off Hwy 89.  Festival time is 11:00 am-2:00 pm.
  • Plumas County is a premier place to enjoy fall colors as the leaves are starting to turn with the onset of colder nights.

BUTTE

  • Step into a  past era by visiting The Stansbury House on West St. in Chico. The house was designed in the Italian Victorian style.
  • In your travels check out Paradise, east of Chico, in the foothills, known for its antique shops and gold rush history. Come visit.
  • Admire the 15 murals on the downtown buildings in Oroville.  You can pick up a map at The Lake Oroville Visitor’s Center.

Tehama

  • Don’t miss the Manton Apple Festival at the Manton School on Oct 1st.  You’ll experience great apple treats and lots of fun.
  • Visit the Corning Museum on Solano St. to see artifacts representing the cultural heritage of the area.
  • See the West Coast Monster Truck Nationals at the Tehama District Fairgrounds, in Red Bluff, Oct. 1st-2nd.

September 18th – September 24th

SHASTA

  • Explore the Samwel or “Grizzly Bear Cave” that was known to the Wintu Indians as a place where you could gain strength.
  • The McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park offers stunning views of the Burney Falls and five miles of hiking trails.
  • Stop by the Coleman Fish Hatchery in Anderson and see the life cycle of Chinook salmon up close and personal.

TRINITY

  • Campground choices abound in beautiful Trinity County. Check their recreation guide at the Trinity County Chamber of Commerce.
  • Yes, some things are still free! Sept. 24th you get free entrance into all national parks. We have many in the Shasta Cascade Region.
  • Walk the streets of the historic town of Weaverville with its beautiful scenery and explore the local unique shops and boutiques.

SISKIYOU

  • Let your eyes behold the largest gold display south of Alaska at the Siskiyou County Courthouse in Yreka.
  • Experience a sense of adventure by horseback riding through the beautiful Klamath National forest, with stunning views and scenery.
  • Take a back packing trip to Tangle Blue Lake, a 4 mile trail leading to a breathtaking alpine lake, with campsites and mountain meadows

LASSEN

  • For wonderful osprey viewing opportunities visit Eagle Lake and hike the Osprey Overlook Trail.  Be sure to pack your binoculars and camera.
  • Willow Creek Wildlife Area, which is 16 mi. north of Susanville on Hwy 139, is a major waterfowl nesting & habitat area.
  • Visit the Roop’s Fort/Lassen Historic Museum whose exhibits chronicle the last 170 years in Susanville’s history. Check hours. 530-257-3292.

MODOC

  • Modoc County Historical Museum in Alturas offers over 150 years of history including Native American artifacts.
  • Sept. 17-18, enjoy the Wings of the Warners Migratory Bird Festival in Alturas. Help celebrate the bird life of Modoc Co
  • Don’t miss the Alturas Hot Air Balloonfest on Sept. 17&18.  Start the day right with a sunrise breakfasts on both days.

PLUMAS

  • Check with the Visitors Bureau for a brochure of the Plumas Co. Backcountry Drive of Quincy-La Porte-Johnsville Route.
  • There are 61 locations to view along the Quincy Heritage Walk.  The buildings you see represent important historical architecture.
  • Visit the Lakes Basin Recreation Area near Graeagle and take a short hike to Frazier Falls, a beautiful 250 foot  waterfall.

BUTTE

  • To cool off from the heat, visit the 3.75 acre Bedrock Park along the Feather River. Swim in the river or at Nelson Pool.
  • Visit the Ishi monument, a Calif. Historical Landmark, on Oak St. in Oroville.  Ishi is thought to be the last Yahi Indian.
  • Take a tour of the Stansbury House at 5th & Salem Streets in Chico, a beautiful Victorian style home that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tehama

  • Spend the day at the Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area, located along the Sacramento River, shaded by huge oak trees.
  • For family fun, experience the Tehama County Fair in Red Bluff, Sept. 24-25 at the County Fairgrounds.
  • Relax and enjoy Mother Nature by visiting Mill Creek with its mountain meadows and beautiful forests, perfect for camping, fishing or hiking.

Need A Break? – Get Out of the Car, Have Some Fun & Explore the Region

September 4th – September 10th

SHASTA

  • For the wildflower enthusiast head up to Castle Crags State Park and take a short one mile walk on Root Creek Trail. It is the home of 13 species of orchid.
  • To enjoy beautiful scenery, load up the horses and explore the Kanaka Peak Loop trail at the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area to enjoy beautiful scenery.
  • Experience an old fashioned county fair in McArthur at the Intermountain Fair this September 1st through 5th.

TRINITY

  • Enjoy Autumn in the Alps featured throughout the fall in Trinity County beginning with the Barbecue & Fly-In event.
  • Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy unusually high water in Trinity, Lewiston and other Trinity County lakes this season.
  • Discover Trinity Center’s 19th century ranch era, along with artifacts and various photographs by visiting the Scotts Museum in Weaverville.

SISKIYOU

  • Hike the trailhead of Black Butte to enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Shasta, Mt. Eddy, Mt. McLaughlin, just to name a few.
  • If you’re up for a little adventure, then bring a flashlight and explore the Oak Hollow Creek Cave near Happy Camp.
  • Enjoy yourself in Mt. Shasta on Sept. 3rd for Cool Mountain Nights and on the 4th at the Blackberry Festival.

LASSEN

  • Lassen Historical Museum in Susanville showcases artifacts and old time lumbering equipment.
  • Visit Lassen Volcanic Nat’l Park for a chance to view the Lassen Selowskia flower that only grows in rocky alpine environments.
  • Those with adventurous hearts can explore the Nobles Immigrant National Historic Trail or Buckhorn Back-Country Byway from the comfort of their car!

MODOC

  • Visit the Tule Lake War Relocation Center National Monument and learn about the history of the internment camp located in Newell.
  • Take a scenic hike to Mill Creek Falls, Modoc County’s largest waterfall, which can be accessed from Mill Creek Falls Campground.
  • Dust off the old mountain bike and head to Devil’s Garden Mountain Bike Area to bike 3 miles of steep pavement and 2.3 miles of flat dirt roads appealing to beginners and advanced riders alike.

PLUMAS

  • Take a self-guided tour through the historic town of Greenville, where you can find a number of historical buildings.
  • Explore the 7 wonders of the railroad world beginning 6 miles west of Quincy. See their Chamber of Commerce for a map.
  • For a great bike ride, try the easy loop around Lake Davis, which includes 6 paved miles & 12 gravel miles.  Beautiful!!

BUTTE

  • Pack up your bike and hit the Bradford B. Freeman Bike Trail, which offers 44 miles of scenic off-road recreational riding.
  • Bring your off road vehicle and get ready for some fun by visiting the Clay Pit State Vehicle Recreation Area in Oroville
  • For an amazing opportunity to see rescued wild animals in Butte County look into the Barry Kirshner Wildlife Foundation.

TEHAMA

  • Get outside and enjoy the view of the Sacramento River while walking along one of the trails that can be found at the Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area.
  • Mmmm! Olive oils, balsamic vinegars, and dips…who could ask for anything more!? Check out Lucero Olive Oil Company in Corning!
  • For a unique day of peace, serenity, interesting history & wine tasting, visit the New Clairvaux Monastery in Vina.
