December 23rd- December 30th

SHASTA

  • Take advantage of the warm winter weather by golfing one of the many gorgeous greens Shasta Cascade has to offer. Call 1-800-474-2782.
  • For you off-roaders, explore the Chappie Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Area for some dirty fun and stunning views of Mt Shasta. It has over 200 miles of trails behind Shasta Dam.
  • Anderson River Park has a lot of activities to offer! Pick up some discs and check out the well maintained disc golf course. It’s free and fun for all levels!

TRINITY

  • Are you on vacation? If so, take the Trinity River Scenic Byway for some diverse scenery. You will most likely come across some wildlife so drive safe!
  • Attention history buffs, many Chinese explored and searched in Weaverville during the 1800’s for gold. They left behind a temple located now in Weaverville State Historic Park.
  • Into geology? The Trinity Alps Wilderness is the place for you. A mixture of igneous, granite, and metamorphic peaks surround the region. Learn about the Red Trinities; White Trinities and Green Trinities and why they received their names.

SISKIYOU

  • Are you searching for a new taste? Discover the Micro Brewery and Tasting Rooms along Siskiyou County for a satisfied palate. Small towns like Weed, Mt Shasta, Montague and Etna all have delightful establishments.
  • Is it too cold for outside play? Then visit one of Siskiyou many museums and learn about the Native Americans and gold prospectors.
  • Lava Beds National Monument in Tulelake is quite the hidden treasure! There are accessible trails, lava tubes, and honeycomb caves!

LASSEN

  • If you like extreme, then how about winter camping at Lassen Volcanic Nat’l Park!
  • Take a bicycle ride on the Bizz Johnson Rail Trail from Susanville to Westwood. There are plenty of miles of wildlife to be seen on wheels.
  • Interested in plants and vegetation? Biscar Wildlife Area is diverse with an abundance of plant life. Rabbit brush, black greasewood, sagebrush, squaw-apple, and more conspicuous elements can be found in the Great Basin steppe.

MODOC

  • If you’re looking for some great biking areas, go ride on some fantastic trails from the Alturas BLM. (530) 233-4666
  • Enjoy breath taking vistas and some of the highest peaks in northeastern CA by visiting the South Warner Wilderness!
  • Feel as if you are time traveling 150 years ago on the Emigrant Trails Scenic Byway. It’s a beautiful drive of the Wild West.

PLUMAS

  • Looking for something different to do? In La Porte, take a self-guided auto tour of historic mining town sites nearby.1-800-326-2247.
  • Need to get away from it all? Take the Feather River Scenic Byway, a road that navigates through railroad history and historic river canyons. With its low elevation highway you can pass major winter storms.
  • Take out your camera and capture some winter shots of Frenchman Reservoir, already the east side of the lake is freezing over!

BUTTE

  • Enjoy the sunny weather by walking, biking, or having a picnic at Bidwell Park, located in Chico, Ca!
  • Visit Paradise, once known as CA’s apple center and was also home to the first apple celebration back in 1880!
  • View the nation’s tallest and largest earthen dam by visiting Oroville Dam!

TEHAMA

  • View unique lava formations, caves, and more by visiting Ishi Wilderness, once home to the Yahi Yana Indian named Ishi!
  • Take a tasting journey to experience Tehama County’s local bounty along the Tehama Trail!
  • Woodson Bridge Recreation Area in Corning, is open year-round for hiking, camping, and fishing. Can’t get much better than a Sacramento River setting.

    December 16th – December 23rd

    SHASTA

    • Swing the stress away by golfing at one of many Shasta County golf courses.
    • Still shopping? Visit Anderson, where there are several antique shops full of special and unique gifts to choose from.
    • Aaron Neville’s angelic voice will be making new Christmas memories with songs like Silent Night, O Little Town of Bethlehem and O Holy Night at the Cascade Theater December 21st.

    TRINITY

    • Rows of antique shops with vintage treasures, fine jewelry and other finds are waiting in the heart of Weaverville.
    • Want to spend Christmas in the snow? Make reservations at a bed and breakfast or cozy cabin in the Trinity Alps.
    • There’s a festival in Hayfork coming December 17th from 1pm-4pm celebrating Christmas.

    SISKIYOU

    • Snowboarders and skiers get ready because Mt Shasta Ski Park is opening mid December! Check online for conditions or call (530)-926-8610
    • Grab those snow shoes and hike Heart Lake for some spectacular views of pristine mountain ranges.
    • Like bird watching? Tulelake National Wildlife Refuge is home to America’s largest concentration of Bald Eagles each winter.

    LASSEN

    • Susanville Ranch Park offers 1100 acres of nature and wild life. Capture the change of seasons by snapping some shots with your camera.
    • Head over to the Lassen County Fairgrounds for the annual “Festival of Lights” December 16-17th 5pm – 9pm. Call (530)251-8900.
    • Lassen Volcanic National Park will hold a “Ranger Led Snowshoe Walk” at 1:30pm, December 17th-18th .Call (530)595-6133 to make your reservation!

    MODOC

    • Surprise valley has many surprises to visit. Explore the geothermal areas that allow hot springs to settle.
    • Unlimited Exploration is at The Devil’s Garden! I It once was full of lava and now is full of rough broken lava rock, juniper trees, and sagebrush flats in a semi-arid region covering about a half-million acres!
    • It’s that time of year in Modoc County for winter recreation. Get your ice skates out and skis.

    PLUMAS

    • There’s a lot of history covered in Plumas County. Pick a museum and learn about where you live.
    • La Porte is offering all levels of snow shoeing and other recreational winter sports.
    • Bucks Lake is about ready! It has long been considered one of the best snowmobile destinations in the West, so get ready for over 100 miles of fresh snow.

    BUTTE

    • Get educated with science by attending the gateway science museum in Chico. Ice Age Skeletons are an on-going popular exhibit for its strange and enormous appearance.
    • Stop by the Gold Nugget Museum to visit with Santa, December 18th from 12pm-4pm.  Bring the kids along for them to tell Santa their wish list.
    • View the world’s smallest complete mountain range by visiting the Sutter Buttes, also known as the Spirit Mountains!

    TEHAMA

    • Free carriage rides? Yes, in downtown Red Bluff December 17th at the Cone and Kimball Plaza. Ride along the shops and enjoy the holiday décor.
    • Feel like a pioneer by celebrating Christmas traditions in a nostalgic fashion at Ide B Adobe Park. Decorating gingerbread men, tin punching, hot drinks & sweet meats will be happening from 1pm-4pm, December 17th!
    • Need to get out of the house? Check out Corning Museum, full of German and Japanese mounted machine guns, articles of period clothing, black and white photos and other historical items associated with Corning.

    SHASTA

    • Bring the whole family and spend time this week at Caldwell Park. From the Skate Park to the Carter House Gallery there is fun for everyone!
    • Love Jane Austin? Attend “200 Years of Sense and Sensibility” the 11th and celebrate Jane Austin’s “birthday”.  Festivities begin at the McLaughlin Auditorium (Sequoia Middle School) at 1:30pm.
    • Do you love Christmas lights? If So, Check out the Redding 2011 Christmas Lights Tour!

    TRINITY

    • Head over to Hayfork and visit a WW2 Japanese Incendiary Balloon Crash Site.
    • Need some entertainment? Attend the Classic Film Series at the Trinity Theater. It’s happening December 11th. Call 530-623-6004
    • Is fishing your passion? Take a day and try the Trinity River, it’s bursting with Steelhead!

    SISKIYOU

    • Every 3rd Saturday of the month the Railroad Display Room is open to the public. It starts from 10 am – 2 pm. Call 530- 235-0929
    • Calm your mind, while lounging in the beauty of Lake Siskiyou!
    • Head over to McCloud this weekend and enjoy “Old Fashioned Christmas”. With Santa Claus, food, and a tree lighting.

    LASSEN

    • Visit the Roop’s Fort/Lassen Historic Museum whose exhibits chronicle the last 170 years in Susanville’s history.  Make sure to call ahead for hours.
    • Check out well crafted totem poles in Shingletown.  Some are over 60 feet tall and said to possess magical powers! Call 530-474-3706.
    • Still lots of silver-tips left for a perfect Christmas tree. Make it a day trip with some hot chocolate and snow fun adventure.

    MODOC

    • Try a fun and interactive way to experience the outdoors that will get you thinking with Geocaching. You may even find some treasure!
    • Come explore the Pit River Watershed. Learn about the water cycle, agricultural forestry, cultural history, geology, aquatic restoration, and bird, fish and turtle interpretative displays.
    • It’s that time of year in Modoc County for winter recreation. Get your ice skates out and skis.

    PLUMAS

    • Last chance this Saturday to catch the Santa Train!! Experience this unique holiday tradition with family and friends! Catch the Train at 5pm in Portola!
    • Get creative by entering the Gingerbread House Contest! It’s for all ages. Just make sure your house is edible! Call 530-596-4143.
    • Fun Fact: Plumas County is home to the world’s largest ponderosa pine tree. It is 334 feet tall, 24 feet around and 7.5 feet in diameter.

    BUTTE

    • The famous performance, The Nutcracker, is playing in Paradise December 16th-18th. Enjoy the show with family and friends. For more information call 530-872-1719
    • Bring some warm clothes and hike the 9 mile Feather River Falls loop near Oroville. Feather Falls is the 6th largest waterfall in the country.
    • Just outside Chico resides the Honey Run Covered Bridge, the only three-level covered bridge in the nation.

    TEHEMA

    December 2nd – December 9th

    SHASTA

    • Head on over to the Shasta State Historic Park and the Whiskeytown Powerhouse Historic District this Saturday betwen 11am- 4pm for the “Old time Holliday in the Parks”.  This event includes free admission to the musuem, crafts, refreshments and entertainment!
    • Make sure to book your seats for this years “The Nutcracker,” a product of the Redding City Ballet at the Cascade Theatre. Showings are the 9th and the 10th, from 7:30-10pm.
    • For an amazing winter wonderland experience, visit the Burney Falls State Memorial Park!

    TRINITY

    • Check out the J.J. Jackson Museum and check out the old fashioned tools the settlers used in the old days.
    • Hayfork, reminiscent of a frontier village, is home to the nearby Natural Bridge. This is a natural limestone arch that crosses a narrow ravine.
    • Did you know that the opportunities for winter recreation in Trinity County are nearly endless?  If you snowshoe or cross country ski, simply find the snow, put your bindings on and go!

    SISKIYOU

    • Join in Lake Shastina’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting this Saturday, December 3rd at 6:30 pm!
    • Siskiyou County has a variety of amazing art galleries and studios, perfect to stroll through and pick out that one of a kind gift!
    • Come and wander the streets in old town Mt. Shasta while enjoying the picturesque views.

    LASSEN

    • Enjoy snow play with family and friends or hunt for the perfect x-mas tree by visiting the Lassen Nat’l Forest!  Pick up your permit at the California Welcome Center.
    • Pack your camera and visit the Willow Creek Wildlife Area for excellent wildlife viewing opportunities!
    • Take your sleds, pack a lunch and head out to Shingletown hills for some family fun!

    MODOC

    • Witness a piece of American history by visiting the Tule Lake Relocation Center in Newell, which once housed nearly 19,000 Japanese-Americans from 1942-1946.
    • Get your binoculars out and check out Eagle Peak at 9,906. Who knows you may just see some Eagles.
    • Located in Cedarville, the Cressler-Bonner Trading Post was Modoc’s first trading post built in 1865 and is still standing!

    PLUMAS

    • Take a scenic drive along the Feather River Scenic Byway and enjoy winters wonderland from the comfort of your car.
    • If you are interested in finding a great place to take some great winter landscape shots then visit the Little Grass Valley Reservoir!
    • Find unique holiday gifts in the shops along Commercial St. in the historic town of Portola, the only incorporated city in Plumas County.

    BUTTE

    • Visit the Feather River Nature Center in Oroville and learn about the history of this river rock constructed Nature Center, which was once a bath house used by gold miners.
    • Watch the entertaining play, Little Women, at the Chico Theater Company. It starts at 7:30 pm on December 6th. (530) 894-3282.
    • Have some fun while stepping back into history by visiting golden town, Paradise. There are many antique shops and other charming treasures.

    TEHEMA

    • This is a great week to try your luck on the Sacramento River.  Pack a lunch and your favorite fishing rod and head down to the Sacramento River Bend for a day of fishing!
    • Go out for a picnic overlooking the Sacramento River at the William B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park in Red Bluff.
    • Take a road trip heading east on highway 36 towards Lassen for some snow searching! Stop at Mill Creek to find some waterfalls.
